Birthstones by Month

Every birth month has its own gemstone — some have two or three. Find your birthstone below, with its color, meaning, and hardness, then check whether a stone you own is the real thing with the free Gemstone Identifier.

Modern vs. traditional birthstones

The birthstone list most people know is the modern list, standardized by the American National Retail Jewelers Association in 1912 and updated since (spinel was added to August in 2016). Many months also have older traditional stones that predate the modern list. Where they differ, both are shown on each month's page above.

Is your birthstone real?

Popular birthstones — diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, amethyst — are also the most commonly imitated by glass and synthetics. If you have a piece and want to know whether the stone is genuine and what it's worth, scan it with the Gemstone Identifier, confirm it with the Is It Real? tool, or get a free jewelry appraisal. You can also browse gemstones by color to match an unknown stone.
